If you are one of the participating visual artists in the Carnivora book, you have been invited to participate in the Carnivora traveling exhibition, set to open at ©POP Gallery in Detroit on January 12th. This should NOT be of news to you. If for some reason it is, please visit the Carnivora MySpace Exhibition page, ASAP. The direct link from this page is one of the hot-links under BLOGROLL. (That’s to your Right, Cerio, and a bit down). Once there, it is important for you to read the section marked Carnivora Artists FAQ’s and also the one above it marked Carnivora Artists! Consignment And Info Sheet Downloads. To date, over 50 artists have confirmed their intention to participate with artwork in the exhibit, by returning to ©Pop the filled out forms, as requested. Of course, hard copies should be sent to the gallery along with your artwork. (Don’t forget, Kenneth.) And lastly, if you’ve elected, for any reasons, to sit this one out, please drop a line to me or to ©Pop and let us know. We would be very sorry to hear it, but the Heads Up will help us finalize our preparations for the show.
Use them for websites, blogs, myspace, and more!

The show was the original idea, actually. The book, you might say, was a detour on the way to Detroit. What was originally envisioned as a modest size show of around 20 artists, now promises to be an exhibition more than twice as large. The many original artworks that were created for the Carnivora book will form the core of the show, premiering at ©Pop Detroit with an Opening Reception on January 12th, and a book signing the following day by the attending artists. For details, visit the recently launched Carnivora MySpace page. The website provides information for collectors and participating artists alike, as well as a sneak preview of many of the artworks that will be in the exhibition, which is scheduled to coincide with The North American International Auto Show, the most important event in that industry. Calling your attention to a new Page on this blog, check out at your leisure Artist Profiles. I’ll be adding more names as time allows.
It has been a month-and-a-half since the last blog entry, so there is much to tell. First, Tomi Ungerer was located just days before the book closed, allowing us to add him to our list of illustrious contributors. Permission never came from the publisher of Douglas Adams’ The Salmon of Doubt, so you’ll just have pick up this excellent book to enjoy the hilarious musings of a British cabbie. In the meanwhile, we were fortunate to secure a few more excellent contributors to Carnivora. Their names have been added to the updated list of 112 participating artists & writers. After a final round of grueling last minute corrections, the book was finally sent off the printer in mid November. None of this would have been possible without the selfless dedication and hard work of Kevin Slaughter, the Carnivora book designer, who stayed with it well past what should have been the end. I would also like to single out my friend Matthias Belz, whose meticulous final round of proofing caught, what I hope, was the last batch of embarrassing typos, Viktor Koen for his striking cover design (see above), and George Petros for managing to extract some last minute comments from me on this project. The ride was very much like a roller-coaster, seemingly without end, both thrilling and frightening at the same time. And we have only just begun. Now comes the Carnivora exhibitions, which will be the fun part.
During the last two months I’ve tried everything to locate for the CARNIVORA book one of my all time favorite artists, the legendary Tomi Ungerer . I searched the Internet, tracked down his old friends and contacted his publishers. Now, on the very last days of final production, there is a ray of hope we may be able to obtain his permission. This morning I was informed that my invitation has been forwarded to a close family member of his. In the meantime, I’ve made a note to duly credit everyone who has lent me their assistance in this quest. Confirmed since the last post: Robert LaDuke, Tanino Liberatore and Martin Wittfooth.
Mark Bryan, another wonderful artist joined us today, together with Craig LaRotonda, Stainboy and, while we were sleeping, my friend Demetrios Varkas, from Down Under. We are now nearly done, except for the four pages I am still trying to get permission to reprint from The Salmon of Doubt by Douglas Adams and, of course the two drawings by my all time hero, the great Tomi Ungerer.
While Kevin Slaughter and Chris X were manning the Scapegoat Publishing booth at the2007 Chiller Theater Convention in New Jersey this weekend, I tried to keep busy, too.By tomorrow, I hope to have responses from a few more artists I invited into the Carnivora book. Today, I heard back from Heathcote Williams. Autogeddon will be in Carnivora. Writer Joseph Mauceri delivered a wonderful original short story and,as a last minute surprise, writer and photographer, Chris Stein, founding member of the band Blondie, just joined the ride.
As George Petros and Deanna Lehman race to complete in time the editing of more than one hundred biographies for Carnivora, I’ve continued to push my luck.Saving some of the best additions to the book for the last, I have managed to secure the creative contributions of two more great artists, Harlan Ellison and Shag, and came across and secured a wonderful visual statement by artist Amjad Rasmi during my ongoing search for the legendary Tomi Ungerer. With only a few days to go for getting all final art in-house, four big question remain unanswered: Will I be able to convince the estate of Douglas Adams to allow me to excerpt two hilariously brilliant pages of writing from The Salmon of Doubt? Will I find Heathcote Williams in time and will he find enough merit in the Carnivora book to let me borrow a segment of his epic poem Autogeddon before Federal Express picks up the PDF files of this book? When will Scapegoat Publishing get a final page count on the book from me? Check back in a week for the answers. I will try to keep you pasted.
