L’Imagerie Gallery relocates to a spacious North Hollywood location, with a gala inaugural exhibit reception:
Carnivora: The Dark Art Of Automobiles
Saturday, May 3rd at 7PM
L’Imagerie Gallery is proud to be hosting the second leg of the exhibition tour of Carnivora: The Dark Art of Automobiles, which will coincide with the official publication release date of the book of the same name published by Barany Books / Scapegoat Publishing with an opening reception on Saturday, May 3rd, 2008 at 7PM.
90 internationally renown Post-Pop artists contributed two or more pieces for the book, of which nearly all will be on display in the exhibition, most notably, Robert Crumb, HR Giger, Robert Williams, Zdzislaw Beksinski, Ron English, Marshall Arisman, Stanley Mouse, Glenn Barr, Hajime Soroyama, Winston Smith and Niagara.
In addition to the 62 artists from the Carnivora book that were exhibited at Detroit’s ©POP Gallery (Jan 12 - April 5, 2008), Los Angeles Carnivora book artists, Dan Quintana, Shag, Chet Zar, Coop, Anthony Ausgang, Greg Brotherton, David Trulli, Ken Keirns, J.L. Robbins and Mark Mothersbaugh of DEVO, plus seven new artists, Kent Bash, Dean Fleming, Chris Peters, Bart Powers, Dwayne Vance and Charles Wish will be joining the exhibition at L’Imagerie Gallery.
Curated by New York artist agent, Les Barany, Carnivora is a shadowy realm where flesh and machine coalesce into humanity’s greatest technical achievement — The automobile. Indispensable extensions of our nervous systems, cars are metallic monsters as dark and destructive as the men and women who drive them.
Carnivora: The Dark Art of Automobiles takes you on a chilling joyride powered by the Automotive Age’s hottest artists.
L’Imagerie Gallery, a world leader for 35 years in the American art movement sometimes dubbed, “Lowbrow” or “Pop Surrealism”, has now relocated it’s collection to 10555 Victory Boulevard in North Hollywood, California. Founded by Phyllis Jacobson, a former Roller Derby performer, whose passion for Pop Art led to the opening of L’Imagerie in 1973 after amassing a collection which included works and multiples by legends, Andy Warhol, Roy Lichtenstein and collectible turn of the century ephemera such as vintage Art Nouveau and Art Deco posters and prints.
Debra Jacobson would soon follow in her mother’s footsteps and build L’Imagerie into a Post-Pop /Underground art institution, jump-starting the second wave of rock posters by publishing and financing then emerging artists like, Frank Kozik and EMEK. L’Imagerie boasts one of the greatest collections in the world of Rock posters and Underground Art, with original works by renegade post-pop painters and illustrators like, Robert Williams, Robert Crumb, Rick Griffin, Todd Schorr and the famously collectible Los Angeles painter, Mark Ryden.
Carnivora: The Dark Art Of Automobiles, runs through June, 2008.

What is humanity’s greatest technical achievement? Why, the automobile, of course. It changed everything. Previous punditry described the automobile’s ascent from molten metal and raw rubber into ubiquitous vehicle of dreams. The chronicle of the car fills uncountable volumes. CARNIVORA: The Dark Art of Automobiles is the latest chapter in our ongoing observations of cars, their drivers, passengers, loads, and secret histories. The art and writings herein take somewhat of a left turn vis-à-vis the rather straight-and-narrow path of automotive art and writing. Instead of focusing on the vehicle’s physicality, the art of CARNIVORA focuses on the vehicle’s psychological impact.
In an examination of the dark side of automobiles and our obsession with them, CARNIVORA features an international group of 92 artists, among them: Anthony Ausgang, John U. Abrahamson, Glenn Barr, Zdzislaw Beksinski, Trevor Brown, Gregory Brotherton, Patrick Byers, Vincent Castiglia, Joe Coleman, Coop, Bernado Corman, Robert Crumb, Jason D’Aquino, Ron English, H.R. Giger, John John Jesse, Viktor Koen, Frank Kozik, Dennis Larkins, Robert LaDuke, Tanino Liberatore, John “Crash” Matos, Mark Mothersbaugh, Stanley Mouse, Niagara, Camilo Pardo, Peter Pontiac, Pooch, J. K. Potter, Dan Quintana, J.L. Robbins, Sibylle Ruppert, Shag, Winston Smith, Hajime Sorayama, Tom Thewes, Tomi Ungerer, Brian Viveros, Keith Weesner, Robert Williams and Chet Zar, and texts by 22 authors, among them: Jennifer Blowdryer, Steven Blush, Harlan Ellison, Peter H. Gilmore, Jacaeber Kastor, Joseph Mauceri, Carlo McCormick, William F. Nolan, George Petros, Norman Spinrad, Pet Silvia and Chris Stein.
